Figure 377. Women’s Modern Silk Hose
The popular materials favored for women’s hose also lead in fashions for men. Silk, cotton, wool, rayon, and mixtures make up the modern list of fabrics for men’s shortened hose. These are usually woven with a deep-ribbed top which is very elastic and assists in keeping the hose in place. Figure 378. Colors are beautiful and varied. Em- broidery clocks and dropped stitches add to the artistry of the modern sock. The sport hose so fashionable for both men and women strikes a gay note of color in modern dress. These hose are knitted in wool, mixtures of silk and wool, and wool and cotton, and are usually strikingly pronounced in both color and pattern. The sport hose is a distinctive type of leg covering that has gradually developed with the widening interests in modern athletic life.
In looking back over the field of hosiery, it is almost startling to observe the fascinating role played by men in the history of hose. For centuries only gentlemen’s hose were considered. Shapely legs encased in finest silk and displayed with gartered top left women quite out of the picture. Today, however, with women’s shortened skirts and gentlemen’s lengthened trousers the scene has shifted. Attention is now lavished upon milady’s silk hose, while gentlemen are content to stand on the sidelines. The aim of the stocking industry is centered upon the achievement of the most beautiful in hosiery that the world has known, a hose which fulfills in color, texture, and service the every wish of modern women; a hose which not only improves the art of dress, but increases its charm as well. One is reminded of the significant words of the distinguished French author, August Challamel, in his History of Fashion in France:
